# Understanding User Roles

> Learn how free accounts, paid subscribers, and approved producers use BeatPass.

BeatPass supports three main account states:

* **Free account** (Explorer plan)
* **Paid subscriber** (Classic, Plus, or Pro plan)
* **Approved producer**

You can hold more than one state at the same time — for example, a producer who also has a paid subscription.

## Free Accounts (Explorer)

Every new account starts on the free **Explorer** plan.

With a free account, you can:

* Stream the full catalog
* Like tracks and collections
* Create playlists
* Follow producers and other users
* Post comments
* Browse your listening history
* Create one <Tooltip tip="Credits that control how many beat requests you can create each month. Your plan determines your allowance.">beat request</Tooltip> per month (one token)
* Apply to the Producer Program

## Paid Subscribers

Paid plans add licensed download access and additional features on top of the free account.

Subscribers can:

* Download eligible beats under BeatPass's standard licensing
* Access license certificates in **Your library** → **Licenses**
* Keep the licenses they obtained while subscribed
* Create more beat requests per month based on plan tier

## Approved Producers

Approved producers receive a public producer profile plus access to producer-only tools. You become a producer by applying through the [Producer Program](/help/producer-program).

Producer access includes:

* Uploading tracks and collections
* Editing your producer profile
* **Backstage** access (the Producer Dashboard)
* Performance analytics and progress tracking
* Payout onboarding from **Finances**

### Producer Dashboard

Click your **profile avatar**, then select **Backstage** to open the Producer Dashboard.

### Producer Downloads

Producers can always download their own tracks. To download beats from other producers, you need an active paid subscription — producer status alone does not include download access to the broader catalog.

## Upgrading

### From Free to Paid Subscriber

Click your **profile avatar**, then select **Billing** to choose a plan. You can also visit the [Plans & Pricing](/help/plans-and-pricing) page to compare options.

### From User to Producer

Use the [Producer Program](/help/producer-program) to apply, claim an existing artist page, or request verification. The review process takes one to three days.
